Nov. News: Recover and Grow

Athens, GA is a huge music town with a lot of history. This means that there are iconic pieces of architecture that are getting lost, destroyed, or run down. Nuçi’s Space is working to restore a historic steeple in Athens that’s associated with R.E.M. (first show ever was there!), Neutral Milk Hotel, Of Montreal, and many other Athens bands. They’ve got a pretty huge crowdfunding goal to make this happen, but they also have some incredibly awesome rewards: clothes from Of Montreal, the pylons from Pylon, etc.

Sleeping at Last has started a company called Emphasis that allows bands to make one-of-a-kind t-shirts based off a band’s lyrics. The shirts include designs as well, so it’s not just words on shirts. This is incredibly cool for bands that have very wordy music (The Mountain Goats! Please sign up! Please!) to connect with their fans. So if you’re a fan or a band, jump on this.

Along those lines, Noisetrade has expanded their services to include fan accounts, which makes a lot of things really easy that were somewhat complicated before. I’m pretty excited about that. I love Noisetrade, and I’m glad to see them grow.

And finally, the RunHundred for November! —Stephen Carradini

This month’s top 10 list makes three things clear:

#1. Iggy Azalea isn’t going anywhere. The Levi’s model and rap phenomenon shows up in the list below with two different collaborators—Rita Ora and Jennifer Lopez.

#2. Calvin Harris is quickly becoming the face of electronic dance music. He also turns up twice this month—in a pop hit alongside John Newman and a club track with Alesso and Hurts.

#3. 128 beats per minute (BPM) is the Iggy Azalea and Calvin Harris of tempos. By that I mean it’s omnipresent. Seven of the ten songs below are within a few beats of this tempo.

In terms of working out, 128 BPM’s dominance in pop music means that–if you can find an exercise routine that approximates this pace–you’ll never be short of new workout music. If you’ve already got fixed a routine, you can swap in any of the songs from that range and see how they fit. If not, you might try walking, kickboxing, or a bootcamp-style workout—all of which are good matches for this speed.

Whatever this month’s top songs lack in tempo variety, they make up for in the genre variety thanks to a woozy remix from Tove Lo, some Australian folk from Vance Joy, and the fervent rock of Walk the Moon. Whether it’s the eclectic mix that draws you in or the four-on-the-floor beats, there’s something here that will invigorate your workout.

Here’s the full list, according to votes placed at Run Hundred–the web’s most popular workout music blog.

Taylor Swift – Welcome to New York – 117 BPM

Tove Lo – Habits (Stay High) (Hippie Sabotage Remix) – 120 BPM

Vance Joy – Riptide – 104 BPM

Jennifer Lopez & Iggy Azalea – Booty – 129 BPM

Calvin Harris, Alesso & Hurts – Under Control – 126 BPM

Demi Lovato & Cher Lloyd – Really Don’t Care (Cole Plante Radio Remix) – 128 BPM

Walk the Moon – Shut Up and Dance – 128 BPM

Iggy Azalea & Rita Ora – Black Widow (Justin Prime Remix) – 128 BPM

Pitbull & John Ryan – Fireball – 125 BPM

Calvin Harris & John Newman – Blame – 128 BPM

THE (not so timely) NEWS

I’m not very good at telling the news on this blog, but here are some things that happened and/or are happening.

  • Hi-res audio’s time seems to have come, what with Pono breaking huge. Hi Res Audio Central wants to be your one-stop shop for all things HRA. Jump on it, if applicable!
  • NWCZRadio.com is running a Kickstarter to get new gear to keep growing their indie-focused radio station. Three days left!
  • IC faves The Trouble Starts, Kye Alfred Hillig, and Cloud Person are all part of the initial offering of The Good Pack, which is a system that lets you download (excellent) albums for free, with all donations for that music going to a youth shelter in Seattle. Good music, good cause! LET’S DO IT!
  • And, finally, it’s time for fall, and that means cooler weather, and that means more running for me. That means RUNHUNDRED. See below. -Stephen Carradini

The Top 10 Workout Songs for October 2014

Fort Wayne, IN – September 30, 2014 – Pop rules in this month’s workout music recap. First off, you have the lingering effects of this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. Collaborations pairing Ariana Grande with Zedd and Iggy Azalea with Rita Ora both received a significant boost in popularity following performances on this year’s broadcast. Moreover, the show is where Taylor Swift debuted the first single from her new album. “Shake It Off” was the most popular, workout song in our monthly poll. Moreover, at 160 beats per minute (BPM), it’s the best song in the list for running.

Remixers also racked up three big tunes this month. Zedd makes his second appearance in the the list with an uptempo version of the summertime smash “Rude.” OneRepublic also find their latest release reworked for the club. Though both of those tracks are geared for the dancefloor, they’d be equally great for a jogging or walking. For a lower rep routine—like kettlebells or Pilates—you might check out the Surkin remix of Charli XCX’s “Boom Clap.” At 93 BPM, it’s on the slower side of things, but it’s lives up to its title with thunderous production that’ll power you through your next session.

On the whole, Top 40 tracks dominate this month’s list. But, there should also be enough alternate versions—plus some crossover hits from upstarts like Kongos and Echosmith—to keep things interesting. So, if you’re looking for something new to freshen up your gym playlist, you’ll find 10 great places to start below.

Here’s the full list, according to votes placed at Run Hundred–the web’s most popular workout music blog.

Charli XCX – Boom Clap (Surkin Remix) – 93 BPM

July News: Orphans, Youtube, and Allison Weiss

Here are some neat things that are happening in the music world.

Singer/songwriter Aaron Hale (whose music IC is quite fond of) is now part of The Orphan Care Network as the head of artistry and advocacy. Helping orphans through art? I would say that’s pretty much in line with everything I want to be about. He is currently booking house shows in the Texas/Arkansas/Tennessee/Alabama area. If you want to host/attend a house show, get more information, or support him financially, you can e-mail him at aaron@orphancarenetwork.org.

Andrew Judah is the best singer/songwriter you’ve never heard of (and I hadn’t heard of, until recently). He’s put up all his incredibly complex, unique and engaging work for free on Bandcamp so that you can get to know him better ahead of his upcoming release Monster (which I am absolutely thrilled for). So if you don’t feel like supporting artists but wants lots of music, this one’s for you!

Post-Echo Records created a movie called Passage, and then they created a remix of it that you the watcher can control. That’s pretty incredible. If you’ve ever read Choose Your Own Adventure books…

Julianna Barwick and Dogfish Head Brewery are two of my favorites at their respective games. (Julianna Barwick might be the only person in her loop-one-voice-into-dozens game, but the approval still holds!) They’ve teamed up to make a beer and an EP named Rosabi; the EP includes the sounds of the beer being made. The beer, however, does not come with a download of the album (wishful thinking!). You can pick it up wherever Dogfish Head is sold; it just went on sale 6/20, so hopefully there’s some left at your local store of choice.

Youtube just got way more music-friendly: Paste and Music Vault are now hosting their own channels. The Music Vault contains Daytrotter sessions, as well as a veritable treasure trove of historical finds. Go nuts, y’all.

Soundsupply continues to hone their niche in the punk/emo/hardcore world by featuring Say Anything and the beloved-by-pop-punkers Allison Weiss. (Allison Weiss is also beloved by Independent Clauses for being one of the most forward-thinking businesspersons in music.) Go get tons of music for relatively cheap and support artists!!

It was bound to happen at some point: a service called ARENA has busted out a “rent-to-own” plan for music. I have no idea whether this will catch on, but there is a quantifiable difference between a song I played once for research and listening to “Wild One” by Flo Rida 30 times because I run to it. Will keep you posted, if anything happens because of this service.

Speaking of running, IT’S TIME FOR THE RUNHUNDRED MONTHLY LIST!!! —Stephen Carradini

Deep Elm Records has easily been one of my favorite record labels over Independent Clauses’ decade. So hit that up.

DJs, running, and a show that moved

UK DJ Ex-Friendly is releasing The Friendly EP later this year. Instead of coming up with art for it himself, he’s throwing it out to the world at large: until July 27, you can submit a potential album cover as part of a contest. The full details include dimensions, a picture for inspiration, and where to send your finished piece.

Come On Pilgrim! has announced that its album release show has moved from August 11 to August 25. All the other details are the same: 9 p.m. @ The Rhumb Line (Upstairs), Gloucester, MA. Here’s the Facebook event! I hope this is the final news on the show, because if I have to post one more time about this show I think my heart will break.

And because the month turned over recently, it’s time for another installation of the Run Hundred list. -Stephen Carradini

International singles hour

I’m at the Southwest Texas Pop Culture and American Culture Association Conference in Albuquerque, NM. Despite the name and location, I’ve already met people from India and Ukraine. Poring over the schedule and picking which talks I’m going to hit (Sci-fi! Poetry! Gaming theory! Harry Potter!) is incredibly fun.

It reminds me a great deal of SXSW, only with more citations. The number of beards is roughly the same.

I’m a big fan of “Rocking in All the Wrong Places” videos (note Broncho’s masterly take on the theme), so I’m all up in The Foreign Resort‘s clip for the Bloc Party/Joy Division-esque “Take A Walk.” Megaprops to the escalator shots and all the unsuspecting Danes who thought this was awesome.

If I told you that a band called Mombi released a song called “Glowing Beatdown,” you’d expect it to be a mega rave-up, right? Or at least really fast? You (and I) would be wrong. It’s a spare, delicate breakup song. It’s right up my alley, much more so than my aforementioned vision of “Glowing Beatdown.”

And, because it’s February now, here’s the month’s Top 10 Workout Songs from RunHundred, courtesy of Chris Lawhorn:

This month’s top 10 is full of little surprises.  Jay Sean and Nicki Minaj’s “2012” actually came out months ago.  But, the new year (and an apt title) have given it a second wind.  Also, Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera got a hip-hop makeover, courtesy of Mac Miller.  Outasight got their first taste of chart success.  And, Adele turned in a performance so forceful that most folks didn’t seem to mind that the song’s more of a ballad than a traditional workout jam.

Here’s the full list, according to votes placed at Run Hundred–the web’s most popular workout music site.

Flo Rida – “Good Feeling (Jaywalker Remix)”

Jay Sean & Nicki Minaj – “2012 (It Ain’t The End)”

Cobra Starship & Sabi – “You Make Me Feel… (Felix Leiter Remix)”

Beatfreakz – “Somebody’s Watching Me”

Katy Perry – “The One That Got Away (R3hab Club Remix)”

Train – “Drive By”

Adele – “Set Fire To The Rain”

Maroon 5, Christina Aguilera & Mac Miller – “Moves Like Jagger (Remix)”

Outasight – “Tonight Is The Night”

Selena Gomez & The Scene – “Love You Like a Love Song (DJ Escape & Tony Coluccio Club Remix)” –Chris Lawhorn

Crank the engine, fire up the new year

Greek rockers The Finger have been releasing song after song from their upcoming full-length album, and title track “I Don’t Believe My Eyes” is the latest. The dark, mysterious tune has a great groove going for it, meshing well with the alto female vocals. The slinky, forceful bass melodies power the song through to the big pay-off—and it is big. You should be looking forward to their album.

Developing: Dylan Gilbert, whose career Independent Clauses has been following for years, is prepping a rock opera with a new band named Hectorina. The band has released two of the tracks at their Bandcamp, and it’s safe to say that they’re heavy on the rock. There’s a ton of different influences thrown in, so this could get very interesting.

New year, new run: I’m going for the New Orleans Rock’n’Roll (Half) Marathon in March. I know, I was astonished that such a thing existed too. Apparently “alternative, classic and punk rock to blues, jazz and soul” will be played at every mile. This sounds like the greatest idea ever. And I’ll need some workout music, so here’s RunHundred‘s top tracks from December:

Lady GaGa – “Marry The Night”

Rihanna – “We Found Love (Cahill Club Remix)”

Avicii – “Levels”

Grouplove – “Tongue Tied”

Daughtry – “Renegade”

Hot Chelle Rae & New Boyz – “I Like It Like That”

Mary J. Blige – “Ain’t Nobody”

The Downtown Fiction – “Super Bass”

Gavin DeGraw – “Not Over You”

Kesha, Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa, T.I. & Andre 3000 – “Sleazy Remix 2.0”

Shout-out to Grouplove, who I’ve been greatly enjoying.

Singles Mix: Slightly Holidays edition

Joplin pop-rockers Me Like Bees wrote “Naked Trees” as a charity track to raise money for Joplin Habitat for Humanity in the wake of the tornado disaster there. The track is catchy as all get-out and includes whistling. You will almost certainly love it, and if you contribute you’ll have rocked for a good cause.

So you know those channels on cable that only play music? My friends had a Christmas channel on that was stocked with Bing Crosby and other traditionals UNTIL THIS HAPPENED:

That’s right; Red Wanting Blue recorded “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch,” and it ended up on a background noise channel. Mind be blown. RWB world takeover is imminent.

My friend Peter Shauger, who records as The Bye Byes, sent me over a “Hey, I think you’d like this” e-mail about pop band Shade (not to be confused with the rock band Shade that we have reviewed before). He was right: I heard the pulsing rhythm and honest vocal performance of “Understand” and fell in love with the track. You should check it out if you like music from people who’ve been playin’ the indie-rock game a while.

November included my first half-marathon, so I’m proud to present the month’s list of top-ranked songs from RunHundred.

Calvin Harris – “Feel So Close (Benny Benassi Remix)”

Katy Perry – “The One That Got Away”

Elvis Presley – “Suspicious Minds (Can’t Walk Out Remix)”

Michael Jackson – “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ (Immortal Version)”

LMFAO & Lil Jon – “Shots (Dummejungs Remix)”

Rihanna & Jay-Z – “Talk That Talk”

Will.I.Am, Mick Jagger & Jennifer Lopez – “T.H.E. (The Hardest Ever)”

Alexandra Stan – “Mr. Saxobeat (Maan Studio Remix)”

Laidback Luke, Steve Aoki & Lil Jon – “Turbulence”

Dev – “In The Dark (DJ Kue Remix)”
